Recently Gaurav Gupta was in Oman for the Signature Oman Couture Show which was managed by Mosaic Events and thanks to Krupa my dear friend, I had the opportunity to sit down with him for a candid talk. Here are some of the questions I asked and his replies:
Me: You are one of the top ace Fashion Designers not only in India but across the world, you have dressed actors at the Oscars, Grammy's, Emmy's and Cannes. What I love most about you is that you make clothes for all genres of women, be it romantic, to fierce chic to ultra glam. How would you define Fashion in your own terms?
Gaurav: Fashion for me is an expression of an individual. It is a form of art. It is an extension of your personality. Every woman who comes to me finds that bit of connect to Gaurav gupta. Fashion is definitely the most basic form of expression.
Me: I love the way you dress yourself. How would you describe your personal style?
Gaurav: My personal style is a bit grungy yet ruled by comfort. I like to look out for interesting things like the different shapes of trousers that I would make for myself and our signature jackets. I also like to wear different t-shirts. My personal style would be experimental men's wear. A lot of it I make for myself or I wear brands like Y-3, Vivienne Westwood or Comme des Garcons.
Me: You were looking at the mountains and saying how it looks/represents Shiva. That just struck a cord with me and I realized as a designer you look at different things around you and draw inspiration from it. Where do you find most of your inspirations from?
Gaurav: Nature for sure. There is inspiration from a lot of fantasy, abstraction, from sculptures, art. I also draw inspiration from surrealism, magic realism, architecture and just life in general. It just looking at something extra, the excitement of creating something new and the science behind sculpting garments that excites and inspires me.
Me: Do you gravitate towards certain colors when you design?
Gaurav: We work with a lot of colors. We work with Blacks and Whites. We work with a lot of Red. These colors are classic, beautiful and bold.
Me: I love Black and White myself. (I was wearing a monochrome look.)
Gaurav: I can see that. I find my different shades within the standard colors. I would have a beautiful deep Bottle green, a Persian blue or a Peacock blue. We find our shades within the standard colors and we then rename the shade as per the feel it gives us. Our Tangerine will be very different from our Holy orange than to our Saffron. We will have about seven different oranges or five different reds. Its very specific the feeling that a colour or shade gives.
Me: The Pantone color of 2016 is Rose Quartz and Serenity. What would you say are the colors to stick to for a summer wedding in 2016?
Gaurav: I would say all the colors and shades in my collection. In today's day and age a woman can wear any color for a wedding. She can even wear black for an evening cocktail reception. Ivory, gold and ecru are always very glamorous. Mint and light pink is very much in trend this wedding season.
Me: A lot of your pieces have lace applique work, shimmer and different types of embroidery embedded in the designs. What would be your favorite amongst all these different works?
Gaurav: Obviously I like all the different types of work as they are my designs. I love Bugle beads, its more indigenous to us. The way its intricately woven into the different fabrics. I use a lot of lace and amorphous fabrics such as silks, gorgettes and nets.
Me: How would your relate past and present fashion trends?
Gaurav: Fashion and trends will always keep changing. But there are things that go beyond fashion, things that are evergreen like Design. That's the kind of fashion I believe in. Beauty is evergreen. The thought behind any design is evergreen.
Me: Who according to your are the style icons of this era?
Gaurav: I would say Anna Wintour, Bella Hadid, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Kalki Koechlin.
Me: And lastly who are some of your favorite designers apart from yourself offcourse?
Gaurav: Some of my favorite designers are Yohji Yamamoto, Vivienne Westwood and Anamika Khanna.
Me: For the customers from Oman and the Middle East, what is the best way to buy a Gaurav Gupta outfit?
Gaurav: My main flagship stores are in at the DLF Emporio Mall in Delhi and Kala Godha in Mumbai.
