Basically not the typical camping types but wouldn’t mind glamping, then you will love the Desert Nights Camp at the Wahiba Sands in Oman. I have done my bit of camping in my younger days but given the choice, I would definitely opt for some basic luxuries. Its ironic that one would use basic and luxury in the same sentence but hey, that’s me.
I was quite reluctant pondering over how hot it would be (we went during the Eid weekend (24-26th of September), but I have to admit the weather was really good in the evenings. The temperature during the day was really hot, n I mean really hot but it was cool and windy under the shaded trees.
It’s about a 2.5-hour drive from Muscat. The new highway make it’s a really easy drive till we reach the sand/dirt road by the foot of the dunes. The corrugation on the mud path makes it quite a bumpy and jarring ride, however its luxury once you reach the campsite.
The camp has one main restaurant which serves buffet meals as well as a-la-carte. We thoroughly enjoyed the live barbecue station (which was on both the nights we were there) and the breakfast set up. The staff was extremely helpful and the whole camp is quite child friendly. From watching the sunset up on the dunes, to sandboarding, to buggy rides, to strides on the camel, there was something for everyone to do. Josh and his bestie Mehr had the most fun at the play area in the middle of the camp.
As we were a bunch of friends hanging out, we had the best time. Nothing like watching the stars in the middle of the desert and cracking the funniest jokes.
The only glitch during the whole trip was that when we were up on the dunes, there was an unexpected strong gust of wind and sand was blowing everywhere. Liam and Arayana (the babies) were crying cos of the sand in their eyes and luckily the vehicles from the camp came just in time to get us down. Josh and Mehr on the other hand loved the whole ‘sandstorm’ experience and we definitely had another story for our books.
On the whole its a great experience especially if you want to experience the desert in a luxurious way.
